Rising star DJ/producer of 2021: “Wuki.”

Californian brothers Johan and Bernie Yang’s career skyrocketed after their 2019 track as BEAUZ, ‘Count The Hours’, became a big hit in China. They set up a 16-city tour in the country, and ever since have been on an upward trajectory.

“We can’t begin to tell you what a wild ride it has been this year,” BEAUZ say. “We’ve toured many amazing cities in China, and threw down some of the best shows of our lives. We also joined a major TV show competition and learned so many things that really broadened our perspective, enriching our vision and enabling us to really find our own unique identity that separates us from other DJs and producers.”
The brothers also celebrated their Indonesian heritage by working with Indonesian artists for a track to celebrate the country’s Independence Day, which racked up 13 million views on YouTube, while collaborating with “some of our favourite artists, who we’ve always looked up to”.

But it was their fans that kept them most inspired during 2021. “We could not have done it without the people who have supported us and our music,” BEAUZ say.

How was your first gig back after lockdown?

“The first stop was One Third Hangzhou. After being in lockdown for months, it was surreal to perform to such a welcoming and wild crowd that knew many of our songs by heart. We felt beyond blessed.”

How have the last 18 months changed how you view your work/life balance?

“We now firmly believe that the keys towards a proper work and life balance are: have a clear grand vision, set realistic small goals to target, and be persistent and consistent in achieving those goals.”

What further steps should the industry take to combat climate change?

“One person’s actions may not cause much of a difference, but if that one person influences people around him/her, then we can achieve a snowball effect.”

What’s the best bit of tech you’ve added to your studio or DJ setup this year?

“One VST we acquired this year is UVI World Suite, and you won’t believe the selection of ethnic instruments that comes with it; adding one or two instruments adds that exotic flavour into our production.”

What’s the best album you’ve heard this year?

“We think Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ has some really out-there productions, and we really appreciate Kanye for always being Kanye, never compromising to people’s criticisms.”
