Let’s dance like there is no tomorrow

Words: Kevin Kang

Time sure flies fast. The end of the 2010s is right around the corner, already setting the mood for the beginning of 2020s—a time often depicted in pop culture as grim and dystopian. From aliens invading Earth in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ to the cyberpunk world of ‘Ghost in the Shell’, where humans are replaced with cyber-shells, it seems like the year 2020 is a recurring theme in sci-fi movies which is widely associated with the end of humanity. But even at the end of the world, there will be clubbers—well, according to textures.

The Seoul-based house/techno media collective taps into this dystopian energy, dropping a compilation album to prepare us for the 2020s. Drawing inspirations from ‘Forever 27 Club’—a list of popular artists who died at age 27—‘Right, But’Club’ embodies the stories of millenials who struggled to prosper despite having done everything ‘right’. Returning after a month since the release of their first album ‘N.A.S.A’ in October, the prolific artists collaborated with rave culture inspired brand GPD, creating a line of merchandise to celebrate their sophomore release.

Kicking off with the opener track ‘Blanc Bec’ by Elias, the first half of the album is imbued with a warm and positive energy. Laden with percussive elements, the track is a breezy journey through sun-soaked guitars and atmospheric strings. A similar vibe spills into the next track ‘Hearts’, which is a collaborative effort of KONA and ADA ACID. Joined by dreamy pads and glittery sounds, a short skit taken from E.E Cummings’ ‘I Carry Your Heart with Me’ resonates throughout the track. The album takes dark turns with songs like Malt’s ‘System Failure’ and Objet’s ‘Over Ceilin’, reaching its peak in amu’s ‘Skyway’. The final track opens with trippy soundscapes reminiscent of Planetary Assault Systems, which is later accompanied by a heavy dose of thumping techno kicks and unique samples, making this a proven peak time weapon.
